How to Keep House While Drowning by K.C. Davis was written for people who are struggling with household and self-care tasks due to chronic illness, ADHD, post-partum depression and other health
issues.
It has a number of great tips on how to make care tasks a bit easier, and how to prioritise the most important tasks and let the rest slide.
The reason I love this book is because it combines these tips with an all-important reframing of how we view these tasks. A constant thread throughout this book is that care tasks are morally natural (e.g. we are not bad person if we can’t keep up with laundry), that laziness does not exist, and to be kind to ourselves. It is not a big book or a long one.
To make it even more accessible, she offers an abridged version, in which she will direct you to skip certain chapters. She has used an accessible font and bolded her main points.
Some excerpts:
You do not have to earn the right to rest, connect, or recreate. Unlearn the idea that care tasks must be totally complete before you can sit down. You don’t exist to serve your space; your space exists to serve you. Some ideas for caring for your teeth when brushing is hard: disposable wipes, flossers and pre-pasted toothbrushes….swishing your mouth with some Listerine can kill some bacteria in your mouth when you cannot get any brushing done.
Highly recommend!
