Kia Ora to all our wonderful Wellington members!
Welcome to September! Where has this year gone?! (I feel that it would not be an email from me if I did not start with this phrase!).
I have noticed that the days are getting longer, which is wonderful! We are nearing our summer months, with longer days, and warmer climate…
One reoccurring topic that I keep stumbling upon is our need to push through, often starting with a thought of “let me just push through and just get this one last thing done”. I am terribly guilty of this myself, but one thing I have noticed is that once that “one thing” finishes, another one pops up. This pushes us back into that feeling again, and yet another thing to push through shows up.
The thing with pushing through is that it can be very very tricky for both your energy levels, and your brain. It is hard to concentrate when you have no energy, right? And in turn, not having energy makes your brain think “Oh my goodness I have to push harder before I run out of steam!!”. With this, the dreaded sense of urgency starts and builds up in your brain, which then makes up become more aware of ALL the things we have to do, what we are not doing, what has been partially done…adding more and more to the cognitive load.
This is a cycle can go on and on until burnout or a crash state occurs, and the body has nothing else to give or tend to all the things our brains are telling us to do. This burnout can impact the body’s physical symptoms and disrupts the equilibrium. To help the body get back into balance, it is very important to learn to recognise/notice some of the habits of a lifetime that contribute to some of these behaviors and explore them a bit further. Kind of creating an inventory of what serves us, and what doesn’t serve us. These are very helpful conversations to have with ourselves (I for one have an eternal monologue going on inside my head about this), or with others who can help share some of the load (for example, me!). I’m always happy to chat about these topics, and I’m here if you need a friendly ear or a second brain to run this through. I hope you have a lovely September! And I’m looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible in the meetings, or catching up via Zoom or phone 😊
